The curse of conceding late goals

2014-10-01 00:09:40

Last night, "U" was defeated by their neighbors by a score of 1-0.

The start of the first half saw Veselovsky save a shot in the 3rd minute while Nuno Viveiros saw his free kick in the 26th minute held by the keeper. Mengolo missed a great chance 7 minutes later as he missed a chance one on one with the goalkeeper. A minute later, the same Mengolo left his team in 10 men as he picked up his second yellow of the match for a dive.

The home side shot over Veselovsky's goal in the 37th minute while the last chance of the half saw Ciupe's shot from 40 m barely saved by the goalie in the 41st minute.

The second half saw "U" try to hold out for a draw as the home side threatened to score. Their first chance came in the 77th minute as an opponent shot over Veselovsky's goal once more while Nuno Viveiros saw his shot at the near post saved by the home sides goalie 8 minutes later. Veselovsky was forced to make a save a minute later while Raul Costin tried his luck from range only to see his shot go over the bar.

The match appeared to be headed for a goalless draw during added time when an opponent scored from 6 meters out following a miscue in "U"'s defense. As a result, the home side won the match by a score of 1-0.

Next round, George Ogăraru won't be able to use Jovanovic (suspended for 6 matches following "U"'s match against CSU Craiova), Mengolo (who saw red last game), or Raul Costin, who saw his 4th yellow card of the season. However, there's a chance that "U"'s top scorer last season, Valentin Lemnaru, will return to the field next round.

We've posted pictures taken by Ármán Noémi and Cristi Cosma at the match in the "Photo" section.

Next round, Universitatea will face CS Pandurii Tărgu-Jiu at home on Saturday, October 4th at 18:30.
