Pandurii Lignitul Târgu Jiu Sports Club was born in August 1963 and as a result of the union between Flacăra-Unirea şi CIL Târgu-Jiu.

Other names used throughout the history: *** Flacara Târgu Jiu, Unirea JIL Târgu Jiu, Cimentul Victoria Târgu Jiu, Gorjul Târgu Jiu, Gloria Pandurii Târgu Jiu. The team plays the home games on "Tudor Vladimirescu" Stadium, with a seat capacity of 9200. Marin Condescu is the club president and Petre Grigoraş, Universitatea's former player, is the head coach.

Pandurii was relegated to Liga 2 during the 2005-2006 and 2009-2010 seasons, but each time the Romanian Football Federation decided to keep the team from Brancusi's town into the first league, taking the place of  Sportul Studenţesc and Internaţional Curtea de Argeş, due to financial reasons.

Some representative players: Adnan Guso, Gabi Zahiu, Victor Piţurcă, Lucian Mălăele, Rodin Voinea, Ilie Balaci, Ionuţ Luţu, Robert Vancea, Iulian Ştefan, Liviu Ciobotariu, Romulus Buia, as well "U"'s current players goalkeeper Marius Popa and midfielder Alexandru Păcurar. From the current players, we mention Pedro Mingote, Ousmane Vieira, Vlad Chiricheş, Florin Popete, Mihai Pintilii, Claudiu Voiculeţ, Stojan Vranjes, Cosmin Băcilă, Jaka Stromajer, Ciprian Brata, and "U"'s former player, striker Valentin Lemnaru.

Last season, the matches between our teams ended 1-1 in Alba Iulia, with our team as the host team, and 2-0 in Turnu Severin, with Pandurii as the host team, winning and saving themselves from relegation.
