In the first round of the 2014-2015 Liga 1 season, Universitatea faced newly-promoted ASA 2013 Tărgu Mureș. The mtach, played under heavy rain, finished scoreless.

Karim Boutadjine threatened throughout the first half as he tested Stănciou's goal with three chances in the 21st, 25th, and 29th minutes. The second half started with an overhead kick from Goga, who came on to replace the injured Szekely, that went just wide. Viveiros and Boutadjine tested Stăncioiu who held both shots in the 54th and 55th minute, respectively. Towards the end of the match, Sauvadet and Costin missed good chances that could've won the game for "U" (in the 81st and 90th+2 minute, respectively).

The match saw the debut of Justin Junior Mengolo, "U"'s new striker who was signed to fill the void left by Lemnaru's departure.
