Universitatea Cluj was defeated in their away match in the 33rd round of Liga 1 against Oțelul Galați by a score of 2-1.
The black-and-whites opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Mengolo finished Dolha's long ball. The Cameroonian striker had a chance to double "U"'s lead in the 20th minute, but his lobbed effort was held by Abraham. The home side equalized in the 35th minute through Hamroun, who chipped Dolha from outside the box when he saw that "U"'s goalie was off the line. Towards the end of the first half, Kovacs and Ceppelini could've put "U" back in front in the 39th and 40th minute, but their chances both went wide. As such, the halftime score was 1-1.
The start of the second half saw Morar get played through on goal by Ceppelini in the 55th minute, but couldn't beat Abraham one on one. Oțelul responded a minute later through Dică, whose shot went wide of "U"'s goal. Hamroun and Brigido both had chances in the 63rd minute to take the lead, but both were unable to do so. In the 68th minute, Tudorie headed in Taveres' cross to put Oțelul in front. "U" tried to equalize through Mengolo, whose shot in the 75th minute went wide of Abraham's goal. The final whistle from Gaman sealed a 2-1 defeat for Universitatea as well as their relegation to the second division.
The "Red Caps"' manager will not be able to use Kovacs or Paulinho in the last round of this season's Liga 1 as the former is serving a suspension for accumulating yellow cards while the latter is serving a suspension for a red card. Paulinho's sending off in injury time this match was Universitatea's 7th red card in this season's Liga 1. Mengolo became "U"'s top scorer in Liga 1 with his goal against Oțelul, which gave him a total of 5 for the season.
Universitatea's next match will be on Wednesday, May 27th at 16:45 when they will face Ceahlăul Piatra-Neamț at home in the 34th round of Liga 1.
